Overview

Registered in 1975 by A. Arett, this giant sport of *Hosta* 'Elegans' is distinguished by its large, heavily textured blue-green leaves with dark green undulated margins and a prominent glaucous bloom on the upper surface. The foliage reaches 15 inches (38.1 cm) in length and 12 inches (30.5 cm) in width, with 13 vein pairs, contributing to a substantial mound 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in height.

In the Garden

'Bold Ruffles' performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green coloration and ruffled leaf margins are most pronounced. Its giant size makes it suitable as a specimen plant or as a bold accent in shaded borders, paired with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its broad, textured foliage. The scape height is recorded as 18 inches (45.7 cm), though the flower display is secondary to the foliage.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the large leaves are attractive to both pests.
