Overview

Registered in 1976 by P. Aden, this medium-sized hosta forms a dense, rounded clump with green leaves edged in white. The foliage is lanceolate, measuring 9 inches (22.9 cm) long and 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) wide, with seven pairs of veins and a distinct white margin that provides contrast against the darker green center.

In the Garden

'Bold Ribbons' reaches a mature diameter of 18 inches (45.7 cm) and a height of 10 inches (25.4 cm), making it suitable for the middle to front of a shaded border or woodland garden. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the white margins remain crisp without scorching. This cultivar pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials, and its compact size also suits container cultivation.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitoring and appropriate controls may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
