Overview

Registered in 2013, *Hosta* 'Bluetopia' is a medium-sized cultivar resulting from a cross between *H. 'Urajiro Hachijo'* (pod parent) and *H. 'Potomac Pride'* (pollen parent). Its most distinctive feature is an intense blue-green leaf color that persists throughout the growing season, combined with moderately wavy leaf margins.

In the Garden

'Bluetopia' forms a mound-like clump reaching 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 45 inches (114.3 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the glaucous bloom on both leaf surfaces remains most pronounced. Its broadly ovate, lightly cupped leaves with cordate bases and slightly rippled margins pair well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials. The green scapes, 19 to 23 inches (48.3 to 58.4 cm) tall, bear flowers typical of the genus.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season to establish the root system. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Bluetopia' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, though its heavy glaucous coating may provide some resistance to minor slug feeding.
