Overview

Registered in 2010 by J. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Bluestone' is a giant cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Gold Regal' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Blue Bayou' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its upright, vase-shaped habit and large, broadly ovate leaves that are blue-green, heavily corrugated, and have slightly rippled blue margins, reaching 11.5 inches (29.2 cm) long by 13 inches (33.0 cm) wide with 16 pairs of veins.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a substantial clump 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter and 27 inches (68.6 cm) tall, with a fast growth rate. It is best suited to partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, and its large, corrugated foliage provides strong textural contrast when paired with finer-textured shade perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*. The upright, vase-shaped form makes it an effective specimen or accent plant in woodland borders and shaded beds.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many large-leaved hostas, it may be susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate management measures should be considered in areas where these pests are prevalent.
