Overview
Registered in 2004, *Hosta* 'Blues in the Night' is a large, mound-forming cultivar derived from a first-generation seedling of *H. 'Dorothy Benedict'* (pollen parent unknown). It is visually distinctive for its nearly round, deeply corrugated blue-green leaves with unstable yellow streaks along the margins, combined with a glaucous bloom on the leaf undersides and white leaf backs.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches approximately 25 inches (63.5 cm) in height and 28 inches (71.1 cm) in diameter at maturity, forming a dense, moderate-growing mound. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the glaucous bloom and leaf color are best preserved. The large, textured foliage makes it a suitable specimen or accent plant in shaded borders, woodland gardens, or mixed perennial beds; it is not recommended for container culture due to its size.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the large, corrugated leaves can be attractive to both pests.
