Overview
Registered in 2008, *Hosta* 'Blueberry Waffles' is a giant cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Spilt Milk' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Abiqua Drinking Gourd' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its intensely corrugated, broadly ovate leaves with a heavy glaucous bloom on both surfaces, giving the foliage a blue-green coloration that approaches the hue of blue berries.
In the Garden
'Blueberry Waffles' forms a large, mound-like clump reaching 30 inches (76.2 cm) in height and 68 inches (172.7 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It is best sited in partial to dappled shade, where its heavily textured leaves and blue wax are most pronounced; full sun may diminish the glaucous bloom. The substantial foliage pairs well with fine-textured shade perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*, and the plant’s giant stature makes it suitable as a specimen or anchor in a woodland border.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick, corrugated leaves offer moderate resistance to slugs, though monitoring may be necessary in damp conditions; deer may browse the foliage in areas where they are prevalent.
