Overview
Registered in 2003, *Hosta* 'Bluebeard's Castle' is a large cultivar of unknown pollen parentage, with *H.* 'Jim Wilkins' as the pod parent. It is visually distinctive for its intensely blue-green, deeply corrugated leaves with greenish-yellow margins and unstable streaking, combined with a white, glaucous bloom on the undersides.
In the Garden
This slow-growing hosta reaches a mature spread of 30 inches (76.2 cm) and a height of 16 inches (40.6 cm), with upright foliage. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the blue-green coloration is most pronounced; excessive sun may cause marginal burning. Its heavy substance and corrugated texture make it a strong companion for ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials, and it is suitable for borders or as a specimen in typical hosta-growing zones.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. The thick leaves offer moderate slug resistance, but young shoots may still require protection in damp conditions.
