Overview

Registered in 2010 by R. Kuenster, *Hosta* 'Blue Urchin' is a small, slow-growing cultivar distinguished by its nearly round, medium blue-green leaves with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces and a pointed leaf tip. Its heavily substanced, moderately corrugated foliage forms a compact, upright mound.

In the Garden

'Blue Urchin' reaches approximately 6 inches (15.2 cm) in height and 13 inches (33.0 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of a shaded border, rock garden, or trough. It performs best in partial to full shade and pairs well with fine-textured companions such as ferns, *Heuchera*, or small sedges. Its small size and slow growth also make it an excellent candidate for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Blue Urchin' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, though its heavy substance offers some resistance to foliar injury.
