Overview

Registered in 1973 by R. Savory, 'Blue Troll' is a medium-sized hosta of unknown parentage, distinguished by its satiny blue-green leaves with blue margins. The foliage is broadly ovate, measuring 8 inches (20.3 cm) long by 5 inches (12.7 cm) wide, with 13 pairs of veins, and forms a dense, mounded clump.

In the Garden

'Blue Troll' reaches a mature height of 12 inches (30.5 cm) and spreads to 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for mid-border positions or as a groundcover in partial to full shade. Its compact habit pairs well with ferns, *Heuchera*, and other shade-tolerant perennials. The scape rises 18 inches (45.7 cm) above the foliage, bearing lavender flowers in midsummer.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many blue-leaved hostas, this cultivar is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing; monitor regularly in typical hosta-growing zones.
