Overview
Registered in 1998, *Hosta* 'Blue Star' is a small-sized cultivar of unknown parentage, distinguished by its intensely blue-green leaves with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces and slightly rippled margins. The mound-like plant forms a dense clump of rounded leaves, each with 8 to 10 vein pairs.
In the Garden
'Blue Star' reaches a mature spread of approximately 30 inches (76.2 cm) and a height of 14 inches (35.6 cm), with scapes rising 12 to 16 inches (30.5 to 40.6 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, where its glaucous coloration is most pronounced. Suitable companions include ferns, *Heuchera*, and other small hostas; its compact size also makes it appropriate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring as growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Blue Star' may be susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing in typical hosta-growing zones.
