Overview
Registered in 2002, 'Blue Spanish Eyes' is a large hosta cultivar of unknown pollen parentage, with *Hosta* 'Sea Prize' as the pod parent. It is visually distinctive for its horizontally held, deeply corrugated, broadly ovate leaves that combine a blue-green center with pale yellow, slightly rippled margins, often exhibiting unstable streaks of light green, blue-green, and greenish yellow.
In the Garden
'Blue Spanish Eyes' reaches a mature spread of approximately 37 inches (94 cm) and a height of 20 inches (51 cm), with upright foliage and a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade perennials. Its large, leathery leaves and thick petioles make it a substantial specimen for the woodland garden or mixed border.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick, corrugated foliage offers moderate resistance to slugs, though standard slug control measures are advisable in damp conditions; deer may browse the leaves.
