Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Lakeside Sophistication', 'Blue Sophistication' was registered in 2003 and is distinguished by its medium blue-green foliage with a pronounced glaucous bloom on both leaf surfaces. The leaves are ovate with flat margins and rounded bases, forming a dense, fast-growing mound that reaches 14 inches in height and 35 inches in diameter.
In the Garden
'Blue Sophistication' performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, where its glaucous bloom is most pronounced. At maturity, the plant forms a substantial mound nearly 3 feet across, making it suitable for mid-border positions or as a groundcover in woodland gardens. The 18- to 30-inch scapes bear pale lavender flowers in midsummer, and the blue foliage pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Blue Sophistication' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; regular monitoring and appropriate controls are recommended in areas where these pests are prevalent.
