Overview
Registered in 1998 by D. Reath, this large sport of *Hosta* 'True Blue Sport' is distinguished by its medium blue-green leaves with wide, flat yellow margins. The upright foliage forms a substantial mound, with each leaf measuring up to 9 inches (22.9 cm) long and 7.5 inches (19.1 cm) wide, featuring 13 to 15 vein pairs and a cordate base.
In the Garden
'Hosta 'Blue River' reaches a mature diameter of 30 inches (76.2 cm) and a height of 12 inches (30.5 cm), making it suitable as a mid-border specimen or accent plant in partial to full shade. Its large size and bold variegation pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. The upright habit allows it to fit into tighter spaces than its diameter suggests.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in gardens where these pests are prevalent.
