Overview
Registered in 1986 by A. Summers and the American Hosta Society, 'Blue Piecrust' is a giant hosta cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its large, blue-green leaves with small undulations along the margins, a trait that gives the cultivar its common name.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature size of approximately 44 inches (112 cm) in diameter and 32 inches (81 cm) in height, with scapes extending up to 33 inches (84 cm) tall. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for most hostas, and its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen plant or as part of a mixed shade border. Companion plants might include ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its broad, blue-green foliage.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, 'Blue Piecrust' may be susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing, so appropriate protective measures should be considered in areas where these pests are prevalent.
