Overview
Registered in 2010 by R. Kuenster, this medium-sized hosta is distinguished by its nearly round, blue-green leaves with a pronounced glaucous bloom on both surfaces and heavy pebbling (rugosity). The leaf blade is lightly cupped and folded, with moderate corrugation and 11 to 13 vein pairs, giving the foliage a textured, sculptural appearance.
In the Garden
'Hosta 'Blue Pebbles' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter and 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the glaucous bloom is best preserved. The compact, rounded habit makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as a specimen in containers. It pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials that complement its blue tones.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick substance and pebbled texture offer moderate resistance to slug damage, though standard slug control measures are recommended in damp conditions.
