Overview

Registered in 1994 by Hillier Nursery and introduced by P. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Blue Pearl' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its intensely blue-green leaves with a pronounced glaucous bloom on the upper surface and slightly rippled margins. The leaf blades are rounded at the base, measure 8 inches (20.3 cm) long by 6.25 inches (15.9 cm) wide, and bear 15 pairs of veins, with a dull underside.

In the Garden

'Blue Pearl' forms a mound-like clump reaching 11.5 inches (29.2 cm) in diameter and 23 inches (58.4 cm) in height, with scapes rising 15 to 17 inches (38.1 to 43.2 cm) above the foliage. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the blue coloration is most pronounced, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size makes it suitable for border fronts, rock gardens, or containers.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs may damage the foliage, though the glaucous bloom offers some resistance; deer browsing is possible in areas with high deer pressure.
