Overview
Registered in 1976 by E. Smith and P. Aden from the breeding work of E. Smith, *Hosta* 'Blue Moon' is a compact, small-sized cultivar distinguished by its intense blue-green foliage. The leaves are notably small, measuring 3 inches (7.6 cm) long and 2 inches (5.1 cm) wide, with 12 pairs of veins and blue margins that contribute to its refined, rounded appearance.
In the Garden
'Blue Moon' reaches a mature height of 6 inches (15.2 cm) and a spread of 6 inches (15.2 cm), making it suitable for the front of shaded borders, rock gardens, or trough plantings. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue coloration is most pronounced. The diminutive size pairs well with other small hostas, ferns, or woodland groundcovers, and it is an excellent candidate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitoring and protective measures are recommended in typical hosta-growing zones.
