Overview
Registered in 1998, *Hosta* 'Blue Monday' is a small-sized cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'PeeDee Gray Mulkin' (seed parent) and *H.* 'Popo' (pollen parent). Its primary distinction lies in the medium blue-green leaf margins that frame the leaf blade, producing a muted, cool-toned appearance typical of blue-leaved hostas.
In the Garden
'Blue Monday' reaches a mature spread of approximately 10–12 inches (25–30 cm) and a height of 6–8 inches (15–20 cm), forming a compact clump suited to the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green coloration holds best, and pairs well with small ferns, heucheras, or fine-textured groundcovers like *Vinca minor*. Its small stature makes it an excellent candidate for troughs or mixed shade containers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; regular monitoring and protective measures are recommended in typical hosta-growing zones.
