Overview

Originating from M. Zilis and Walters Gardens, Inc. in 1998, and registered by P. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Blue Max' is a large, slow-growing cultivar distinguished by its blue-green, cordate leaves with slightly rippled margins and dull surfaces on both sides. The leaf blades measure 11 inches (27.9 cm) long and 7.5 inches (19.1 cm) wide, with 14 vein pairs, and the plant forms a dense, mound-like habit.

In the Garden

'Blue Max' reaches a mature diameter of 28 inches (71.1 cm) and a height of 13 inches (33.0 cm), making it suitable for mid-border positions in partial to full shade. Its blue-green foliage pairs well with lighter-colored hostas or ferns to create contrast, and the slow growth rate allows for easy placement without rapid overexpansion. The cultivar is not typically recommended for container cultivation due to its large size.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor foliage regularly and employ barriers or repellents if needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
