Overview
Registered in 1998 by Paul Ruh, *Hosta* 'Blue Lady' is a small-sized cultivar of unknown parentage, distinguished by its intensely blue-green foliage with a glaucous bloom on the upper surface and slightly rippled leaf margins. The leaves are cordate in shape, measuring 6 inches (15.2 cm) long and 4.75 inches (12.1 cm) wide, with nine pairs of veins and a dull underside.
In the Garden
'Blue Lady' forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 37 inches (94.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, where its glaucous coating remains most pronounced. The small stature makes it suitable for rock gardens, shade borders, or container culture, and it pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or other small woodland perennials. Its scapes rise 22 to 24 inches (55.9 to 61.0 cm) above the foliage.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur, though the glaucous leaf coating offers slight resistance to pests.
