Overview
Registered in 2010 by R. Kuenster, *Hosta* 'Blue Jewel' is a medium-sized cultivar of unknown parentage, distinguished by its intensely blue-green foliage that retains color well into late autumn. The broadly ovate leaves feature a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, deep veining, and slightly rippled margins with pointed tips.
In the Garden
'Blue Jewel' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its compact size suits border fronts, rock gardens, or container plantings. The blue-green leaves pair well with golden or chartreuse foliage plants, such as *Hakonechloa macra* 'Aureola', or with white-flowered perennials like *Astilbe*.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry spells, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Blue Jewel' may be susceptible to slug and deer damage in garden settings.
