Overview
Registered in 1987 by R. Benedict, this small blue-green hosta was produced from a cross between *H.* 'Dorset Blue' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Blue Moon' (pollen parent). 'Blue Ice' is visually distinctive for its intensely blue leaf margins and cordate leaf bases, forming a compact mound of 3.5-inch (8.9 cm) long by 3.5-inch (8.9 cm) wide leaves with seven to eight vein pairs.
In the Garden
Mature plants reach approximately 8 inches (20.3 cm) in diameter and 3 inches (7.6 cm) in height, with scapes rising 2 to 3 inches (5.1 to 7.6 cm) above the foliage. This small cultivar performs best in partial to full shade and is well suited for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders. Its diminutive size makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation. Companion plants that appreciate similar conditions include small ferns, heucheras, and miniature sedges.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Blue Ice' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor regularly and employ control measures if needed.
