Overview
Registered in 1992, *Hosta* 'Blue Gown' is a large-sized cultivar of unknown parentage, distinguished by its intensely blue-green leaves with a heavy glaucous bloom on both surfaces. The foliage forms a dense, rounded mound with cordate leaf bases, each leaf measuring approximately 23.5 cm long by 22.2 cm wide and bearing 14 pairs of veins.
In the Garden
'Blue Gown' reaches a mature spread of 116.8 cm (46 inches) in diameter and a height of 45.7 cm (18 inches), making it suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in partial to full shade. The substantial blue-green foliage provides strong contrast when paired with gold-leaved or chartreuse hostas, ferns, or shade-tolerant perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Astilbe*. Its large size precludes container cultivation for most gardeners.
Care Notes
Plant in consistently moist, well-drained soil and water during dry periods to maintain leaf turgor and glaucous quality. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release formulation; slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
