Overview

Registered in 2004 as a sport of an unnamed parent, *Hosta* 'Blue Freckles' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its unusual variegation: greenish-yellow leaves are irregularly speckled with bluish-green flecks across the entire blade. The broadly ovate leaves measure 5.5 inches (14.0 cm) long by 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) wide, with nine pairs of veins, flat margins, and a cordate base; both leaf surfaces are dull.

In the Garden

'Blue Freckles' forms a compact, upright mound reaching 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 34 inches (86.4 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and its small stature makes it well suited for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. Companion plants such as ferns, heucheras, or small shade-tolerant perennials complement its muted coloration.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in dry spells, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. Like most hostas, 'Blue Freckles' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; regular monitoring and appropriate deterrents are recommended.
