Overview

Registered in 1996 as a hybrid of *Hosta venusta*, 'Blue Eyes' is a small, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its compact proportions and glaucous blue-green foliage. The leaves, measuring 2.75 inches (7.0 cm) long and 2.25 inches (5.7 cm) wide, bear a medium blue-green margin and a waxy bloom on both surfaces, giving the plant a muted, powder-blue appearance.

In the Garden

'Blue Eyes' reaches 5 inches (12.7 cm) in height and spreads to 12 inches (30.5 cm) in diameter, forming a tidy, moderate-growing mound. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its glaucous leaf surface remains most pronounced. The small size and neat habit make it well suited for the front of shaded borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. Companion plants such as ferns, *Heuchera*, or small sedges complement its restrained form without overwhelming it.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor foliage regularly and take protective measures if needed.
