Overview
Registered in 2010 by R. Kuenster, *Hosta* 'Blue Butterfly' is a small, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its intensely glossy, blue-green foliage with a glaucous bloom on the undersides. The broadly ovate leaves, measuring 4.25 inches (10.8 cm) long and 2.75 inches (7.0 cm) wide, feature flat margins and a lightly flat surface, with 9 to 11 pairs of veins and notably heavy substance.
In the Garden
With a mature spread of 16 inches (40.6 cm) and height of 7.25 inches (18.4 cm), 'Blue Butterfly' forms a compact, moderate-growing mound suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as edging in partial to full shade. Its small stature and heavy substance make it well-suited for container cultivation. Companion plants should be chosen to contrast with its blue-green cast, such as golden-leaved *Hakonechloa* or pale-flowered *Tiarella*.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during establishment, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While the heavy leaf substance offers some resistance to slug and deer damage, monitoring in moist conditions is advisable.
