Overview
Registered in 1987 by C. Owens, 'Blue Betty Lou' is a large blue-green hosta distinguished by its broad, heavily textured leaves with a pronounced glaucous bloom and slightly undulating margins. The substantial foliage, reaching 10 inches in length and 9 inches in width with 16 pairs of veins, forms a dense, rounded mound.
In the Garden
'Blue Betty Lou' reaches a mature height of 25 inches (63.5 cm) and spreads to 32 inches (81.3 cm) in diameter, making it suitable as a specimen or in mixed perennial borders. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones. The blue-green foliage pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its large size also makes it effective as a groundcover in woodland settings.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most blue-leaved hostas, 'Blue Betty Lou' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and manage accordingly.
