Overview

Registered in 2005 from unknown parentage, *Hosta* 'Blue Baron' is a small, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its intensely blue-green, lance-shaped leaves that retain their color throughout the growing season. The leaves are flat, dull on both surfaces, and arranged in a heavily stacked, full habit that gives the plant a dense, compact appearance.

In the Garden

'Blue Baron' reaches 7 inches (17.8 cm) in height and spreads to 26 inches (66.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its small size makes it suitable for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders. Companion plants such as ferns, heucheras, or small woodland perennials complement its blue foliage without overwhelming the plant.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain even moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While slugs and deer may damage foliage, the plant's thick leaves offer moderate resistance; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
