Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Dorothy Benedict' registered in 2008, 'Blu Dort' is a giant blue-green hosta distinguished by its substantial, broadly ovate leaves with slightly rippled margins and a notably thick texture. The leaves measure up to 15 inches (38.1 cm) long and 12.25 inches (31.1 cm) wide, with 17 vein pairs, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a dull underside.
In the Garden
'Blu Dort' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 48 inches (121.9 cm) in diameter and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the blue-green coloration is most pronounced. Its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen plant or as a backdrop for smaller perennials such as ferns, astilbes, or heucheras in shaded borders and woodland gardens.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, to maintain leaf quality and prevent edge burn. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick leaves offer some resistance to slugs, though monitoring is still advisable in damp conditions. Deer may browse the foliage in areas where hostas are a preferred food source.
