Overview
Registered in 2002 from unknown parentage, *Hosta* 'Blooming Fool' is a large, fast-growing cultivar notable for its dense, ground-draping mound of variegated foliage and abundant flower production. Its broadly ovate, lightly cupped leaves feature medium green, slightly rippled margins with a slightly shiny upper surface and dull underside, supported by 11 to 12 vein pairs.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a substantial mound 18 inches (45.7 cm) tall and 48 inches (121.9 cm) in diameter, with leaves that drape to the ground, creating a full, rounded habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hostas, and its large size makes it suitable as a specimen or in mixed shade borders. The abundant green scapes, reaching 24 to 28 inches (61.0 to 71.1 cm) in height, bear numerous flowers, adding seasonal interest. Companion plants might include ferns or other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are common.
