Overview

Registered in 2003 by P. & J. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Blauspecht' is a medium-sized cultivar arising from self-pollination of the 'Tardiana' group. It is distinguished by its blue-green, ovate leaves with cordate bases, which exhibit moderate cupping, waviness, and folding, along with lightly rippled margins and a dull surface on both sides.

In the Garden

'Blauspecht' forms a slow-growing, mound-like clump reaching approximately 27.5 inches (69.9 cm) in diameter and 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, and is notably larger than most 'Tardiana' selections. Its substantial blue foliage pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials; it is suitable for borders, woodland gardens, or as a specimen in medium-sized containers.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as with most hostas.
