Overview

Registered in 2003 by P. & J. Ruh, 'Blaumeise' is a medium-sized hosta derived from self-pollinated *Hosta* 'Tardiana'. The cultivar is distinguished by its ovate, dark green leaves with flat margins, a very shiny upper surface, and a dull underside; the leaf blade is lightly twisted, folded, wavy, and corrugated, with nine prominent vein pairs.

In the Garden

'Blaumeise' forms a slow-growing, mound-like clump reaching 9 inches (22.9 cm) in height and 21 inches (53.3 cm) in diameter. It is suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones, where its compact habit and textured foliage provide contrast alongside finer-leaved perennials such as ferns or heucheras. The plant's moderate size makes it appropriate for the front of a border or as an edging specimen.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the shiny foliage may attract both pests.
