Overview
Registered in 2003 by Japanese breeder H. Sugita, *Hosta* 'Blaue Ruh' is a large blue-green cultivar notable for its intensely textured foliage and substantial mound-like habit. The leaves are ovate with cordate bases, deeply folded and moderately corrugated, with slightly rippled margins and a dull surface above and below.
In the Garden
'Blaue Ruh' reaches a mature spread of 44 inches (112 cm) and a height of 20 inches (51 cm), forming a dense, moderate-growing mound suited to partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones. Its substantial blue foliage pairs well with fine-textured companions such as ferns, *Heuchera*, or *Carex*, and its large size makes it appropriate as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as with most large-leaved hostas.
