Hosta ‘Black Pearl’ is a registered cultivar () .

Year registered2001
Section classIV-1

Overview

Registered in 2001, this small hosta cultivar originated from *Hosta* 'Grand Master' as the pod parent with an unknown pollen parent. 'Black Pearl' is visually distinctive for its mound of broadly ovate, dark green leaves with flat margins, complemented by purple bloom scapes and purple seed pods.

In the Garden

'Black Pearl' forms a moderate-growing mound reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its compact size makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. Companion plants include ferns, heucheras, and other small shade perennials.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release formulation. While 'Black Pearl' has good leaf substance, it may still be susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing in typical hosta-growing zones.
