Overview

Registered in 2007, 'Birthday Cake' is a large hosta of unknown breeder, resulting from a cross between *Hosta* 'Red Neck Heaven' (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Invincible' (pollen parent). The cultivar is visually distinctive for its nearly round, blue-green leaves with heavily rippled, medium green margins, a very shiny upper surface, and a glaucous bloom on the underside.

In the Garden

'Birthday Cake' forms a mound-like clump reaching 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter and 15 inches (38.1 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It is suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones, where its broad, cupped leaves provide textural contrast. The plant pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its large size makes it appropriate for mid-border or as a specimen in woodland gardens.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The leaves are moderately susceptible to slug damage, and deer may browse the foliage in areas where they are prevalent.
