Overview
Registered in 1986 by Shaw and the American Hosta Society, 'Birchwood Parky's Blue' is a medium-sized hosta of unknown parentage. It is distinguished by its deep blue-green leaves with a prominent glaucous bloom on the upper surface, creating a muted, powdery appearance.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a compact mound 12 inches (30.5 cm) tall and 23 inches (58.4 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the middle of a shaded border or as a specimen in a woodland garden. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue coloration is most pronounced, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials. Its moderate size also allows for container cultivation in typical hosta-growing zones.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many blue-leaved hostas, 'Birchwood Parky's Blue' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary.
