Overview
Registered in 1989 by Shaw and P. Ruh, 'Birchwood Gem' is a miniature variegated hosta derived from a hybrid of *Hosta nakaiana*. It forms a compact mound of small, cordate leaves with medium green margins and a lighter center, reaching 5.5 inches (14.0 cm) in height and 12.5 inches (31.8 cm) in diameter.
In the Garden
This miniature hosta is suitable for shaded or partially shaded positions in the garden, where its small size and variegated foliage provide textural contrast. At maturity, it forms a low, dense clump approximately 6 inches tall and 13 inches wide, with flower scapes rising to 13 inches (33.0 cm). It pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns, tiarella, or miniature epimediums, and is an excellent candidate for troughs, rock gardens, or the front of a shaded border.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, protect from slugs and deer, which may damage the foliage.
