Overview

Registered in 2003, *Hosta* 'Biggie' is a large hybrid of *H.* 'Sea Prize' and *H.* 'Maekawa' distinguished by its upright, heavily corrugated, nearly round blue-green leaves with dark green, slightly rippled margins, a glaucous bloom beneath, and white leaf backs. The foliage is moderately cupped with a cordate base, 14 vein pairs, and a slightly shiny upper surface, reaching 9.75 inches long and 9 inches wide.

In the Garden

'Biggie' forms a substantial, upright clump 31 inches tall and 61 inches in diameter at maturity, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its heavy substance and deeply corrugated texture make it a strong textural accent among ferns, heucheras, or fine-leaved grasses. The glaucous green scapes rise 33 to 36 inches and carry near-white flowers in midsummer.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick, heavy leaves offer some resistance to slugs, though standard slug controls remain advisable in damp conditions.
