Overview
Registered in 2002, 'Big Zach' is a giant hosta of unknown pollen parentage, with *Hosta* 'Sagae' as the pod parent. It is distinguished by its massive, broadly ovate, deeply corrugated blue-green leaves with slightly rippled margins, a dull upper surface, and a glaucous bloom beneath.
In the Garden
'Big Zach' forms an upright, fast-growing clump reaching 47 inches (119.4 cm) in diameter and 21 inches (53.3 cm) in height, with scapes 36 to 38 inches (91.4 to 96.5 cm) tall. It performs best in partial to light shade and well-drained soil, where its substantial foliage creates a bold textural presence. Its size suits it as a specimen or back-of-border plant in large landscapes, paired with ferns or shade-tolerant perennials of contrasting form.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods; apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Slugs may damage young foliage, and deer may browse leaves in typical hosta-growing zones.
