Overview
Registered in 2008 with parentage unknown, 'Big Stuff' is a large, fast-growing hosta cultivar distinguished by its substantial dimensions and variegated foliage. The plant forms an upright clump reaching 36 inches (91.4 cm) in height and 54 inches (137.2 cm) in diameter, with broadly ovate leaves that have medium green, slightly rippled margins and a cordate base.
In the Garden
'Big Stuff' performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its large mature size makes it suitable as a specimen plant or for filling substantial gaps in shaded borders. The 11.5-inch-long leaves with 14 vein pairs and lightly wavy margins provide textural contrast when paired with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials. Its upright growth habit and scapes reaching 36 to 48 inches in height, topped with white flowers, add vertical interest to the garden.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Big Stuff' may be susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing in typical hosta-growing zones.
