Overview
Registered in 2001, 'Big Pizza Pie' is a giant hosta cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Dorothy Benedict' and *H.* 'Maekawa'. This cultivar is visually distinctive for its nearly round, deeply corrugated leaves that combine a large yellow center with a broad, slightly rippled margin that shifts from dark blue through medium blue to blue-green.
In the Garden
'Big Pizza Pie' forms an upright mound reaching 33 inches (83.8 cm) in height and 31 inches (78.7 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, where the leaf coloration develops most reliably; excessive sun may scorch the yellow centers. The substantial foliage pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast in texture, and the plant's size makes it suitable as a specimen or background element in larger borders.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as both pests may damage the broad, tender leaves.
