Overview
Registered in 2003, *Hosta* 'Big Mamma's House' is a giant cultivar of unknown pollen parentage, derived from a pod parent F-1 seedling of *H.* 'Dorothy Benedict'. It is visually distinctive for its massive, broadly ovate, dark blue-green leaves with unstable streaking of greenish yellow, yellow, and creamy white along slightly rippled margins, and a glaucous bloom on the undersides.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature diameter of 58 inches (147.3 cm) and a height of 33 inches (83.8 cm), with an upright growth habit and moderate growth rate. It is best suited to partial shade in typical hosta-growing zones, where its heavy-substance leaves and white backs provide textural contrast. Its large scale makes it appropriate as a specimen or accent in woodland borders, paired with ferns or shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. The thick, heavy leaves offer some resistance to slugs, though standard preventive measures are advisable in damp conditions.
