Overview
Registered in 1983 by R. Benedict, this medium-sized cultivar resulted from a cross between *Hosta nakaiana* (pod parent) and *Hosta sieboldiana* (pollen parent). 'Big Hearted' is distinguished by its medium green leaves with ruffled margins and cordate (heart-shaped) bases, bearing 11 pairs of veins.
In the Garden
This hosta reaches a mature spread of 36 inches (91.4 cm) with a height of 18 inches (45.7 cm), making it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in partial to full shade. Its broad, textured foliage pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. The scape rises 24 inches (61.0 cm) above the foliage, though no flower color is recorded.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during establishment and growing season; apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Typical hosta-growing zones apply; slug and deer damage may occur, particularly on the ruffled leaf margins.
