Overview

Registered in 2009 by Shady Oaks, 'Big Gary' is a giant sport of unknown origin distinguished by its substantial blue-green foliage and rapid growth rate. The leaves are broadly ovate to nearly round with cordate bases, measuring 12 inches (30.5 cm) long and 11.5 inches (29.2 cm) wide, featuring 14 vein pairs and very slightly rippled margins with a dull, glaucous bloom on the upper surface.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a mound 36 inches (91.4 cm) tall and 50 inches (127.0 cm) in diameter, making it suitable as a specimen plant or for filling large spaces in partial to full shade. Its substantial blue-green leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast in texture or color. The plant's fast growth rate allows it to establish quickly in woodland gardens or shaded borders.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during dry periods and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Big Gary' may require protection from slugs and deer in areas where these pests are prevalent.
