Overview

Registered in 1995, *Hosta* 'Big Dipper' is a hybrid derived from *H.* 'Gold Regal'. This large cultivar is visually defined by its blue-green leaves with medium gold, slightly rippled margins, a combination that produces strong contrast throughout the growing season.

In the Garden

'Big Dipper' forms a substantial clump reaching 48 inches (121.9 cm) in diameter and 31 inches (78.7 cm) in height, with a semi-upright, moderate growth habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its glaucous leaf surfaces remain most pronounced. The broad, cordate leaves pair well with ferns and other shade-tolerant perennials; its size makes it unsuitable for small containers.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Big Dipper' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
