Overview
Registered in 1983 by R. Benedict, this small hosta cultivar is a hybrid between *H. nakaiana* (pod parent) and *H. ventricosa* (pollen parent). 'Betty' is distinguished by its dark green leaves with ruffled margins and variegated coloration, forming a compact, low mound.
In the Garden
'Betty' reaches a mature diameter of 18 inches (45.7 cm) and a height of 6 inches (15.2 cm), making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as edging. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with other small perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*. Its compact size also makes it appropriate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Betty' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and manage as needed.
