Overview

Registered in 2016, *Hosta* 'Betty Hagerman' is a large, fast-growing sport of *Hosta* 'Captain Kirk' (pod parent; pollen parent unknown). The cultivar is visually distinguished by its substantial, ovate leaves with medium green flat margins and a slightly shiny upper surface, contrasting with a very shiny underside.

In the Garden

'Betty Hagerman' forms a broad, mound-like clump reaching 60 inches (152.4 cm) in diameter and 28 inches (71.1 cm) in height. It is suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones, where its large leaf surface and rapid growth rate make it effective as a specimen or groundcover in larger borders. The green scapes, rising 24 to 32 inches (61.0 to 81.3 cm), bear lavender flowers in midsummer. Companion plants include ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that appreciate similar moisture conditions.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The large leaves are susceptible to slug and deer damage, requiring protective measures where these pests are prevalent.
