Overview
Registered in 1989 by C. Owens, 'Betty Darling' is a small hosta cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its dark green leaves with white margins, a compact habit, and a notably low scape height that places the flowers at or near ground level.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature diameter of 10 inches (25.4 cm) and a height of 3.5 inches (8.9 cm), making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as an edging plant. It performs best in partial to full shade and pairs well with other small hostas, ferns, or shade-tolerant groundcovers. Its diminutive size also makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it may be susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and manage as needed.
