Overview

Registered in 2007 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Christmas Tree Gala', 'Bethlehem' is a large, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its variegated foliage: medium green margins frame a lighter leaf center, with the entire blade exhibiting a lightly corrugated, crinkled texture. The broadly ovate leaves, measuring 11 inches (27.9 cm) long by 7 inches (17.8 cm) wide, possess eight vein pairs and a slightly shiny upper surface with a dull underside, contributing to the plant's substantial substance.

In the Garden

'Bethlehem' reaches a mature diameter of 30 inches (76.2 cm) and a height of 14 inches (35.6 cm), forming a moderate-growing mound suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones. Its large, textured leaves make it an effective specimen or groundcover in woodland gardens, and it pairs well with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its variegation. The plant's substantial substance and crinkled foliage provide visual interest even when not in flower.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many large-leaved hostas, monitor for slug and deer damage, though the crinkled texture may offer slight resistance to feeding.
