Overview
Registered in 1986, 'Betcher's Blue' is a small hosta cultivar derived from a hybrid of *H. 'Tokudama'. It is visually distinctive for its blue-green leaves with one large undulation along the margins and a cordate (heart-shaped) base. The leaf blade measures 6 inches (15.2 cm) long by 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) wide, with 11 to 13 pairs of veins.
In the Garden
This compact cultivar reaches a mature diameter of 26 inches (66.0 cm) and a height of 12 inches (30.5 cm), making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or small shade beds. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green coloration is most pronounced. 'Betcher's Blue' pairs well with other small hostas, ferns, or shade-tolerant perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*. Its small size also makes it a candidate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, monitor for slug and deer damage, which can be particularly problematic on the broad, tender leaves of this cultivar.
